City of Taormina
Discover Taormina’s rich heritage from Antiquity dating from 734 BC, when the Greeks arrived here and founded a town perched 200 metres above sea level on a rocky promontory facing Mount Etna. After them came Romans, Byzantines and Saracens, each leaving their architectural legacy.
Modern-style tourism, however, dates only from the late 19th century. This idyllic spot has attracted countless famous people, including artists of all kinds, stars of stage and screen, heads of state and monarchs. Among Taormina’s many notable monuments are the Ancient Theatre, which is surprisingly well-preserved, the 13th century cathedral and the 10th century Corvaja Palace.
